They say every picture tells a story. In Daniel’s case every story paints a picture of the characters in his life, living inside his heart, hiding in his mind. As mysterious HJ Furl, he writes all sorts of genres: dark, erotic romance, drama, science fiction, horror and fantasies, laced with a liberal dash of intrigue.
Daniel lives in England with the love of his life. He learned to write fiction online, and published his first book three years later. These days he is the treasurer of an established writers’ circle that has just celebrated its 85th anniversary. A founder member of the read-and-write group that meets on Thursday mornings in the chapel of a lovely hotel. An active contributor to a vast online group of scribes, a few of whom meet face-to-face at the art café nearest the mouth of his father’s beloved River Arun. And occasional panellist for an online and live self-publishing festival for lively authors held in Aylesbury.
When he is not writing, he loves to ramble the beautiful countryside with Ailsa or tend his bounteous allotment. He thrills to all tastes in music, theatre, and films. Sadly, Daniel only reads gripping books, like Animal by Lisa Taddeo and If Only by Vigdis Hjorth, as he does tend to get bored rather easily.
His life wasn’t always like this. He says…
“Hearts & Minds started out as an anthology of short stories. Then, I started to write about my youth, my life as a teenager caring for a manic depressive mother. My work as a stressed-out manager. My recovery from the long hours and intense pressure we caterers experience, ‘all part of the service’. My creative rebirth – as a writer. Some of this book is true. Some of this book is only partly true. Some of this book isn’t true at all. The stories are, mostly, symptoms of my vivid imagination.”
Daniel is due to appear at the 4th Oct 2026 all-day in-person festival.
