Terry Pierelli

On Sunday 13th September 2026 Morgen hosted seven hour-long panels (listed below with some of the discussion points). The authors on the day were: AA Abbott ~ Charles Harris ~ Denise Beddows ~ Elizabeth Hill ~ Jennifer Page ~ Pam Arland ~ Pete Williams ~ Phil Oddy ~ and Terry Pierelli.

Terry is currently working on his first epic fantasy series and was originally going to join us in the chat but he was on camera (patiently while we all talked or contributed and/or asked questions for all the panels below…

    • 9.30am-10.30am: characters: How do you choose your characters? Are they based on someone you know? Do any of them share your traits? How do you make your characters distinctive? How much detail do/should you put about them (i.e. Jack Reacher’s tall!)? Do you write characters of a different gender or generation? How many characters do you have in your stories? How do you keep track of them in your notes? Will you make a minor character in an early work more of a prominent character in a future book? Do you have favourite characters in other books/films? Why do you find them memorable?

    • 11am-12pm: settings: Do you use settings you know, made-up locations or a mix? How much detail do/should you provide about the location? Does it vary depending on your genre? Do you visit the real locations you use? Where would you like to travel to/write about? Do you have favourite locations in other books/films?

    • 12.30pm-1.30pm: plots: Do you plan or just get an idea and run with it? For either route, how much do you plot? Does it vary depending on whether you write a series or standalone? Does the length of the story matter, i.e. short story vs standard novel vs epic novel! What should you include in a novel plot? Does that vary per genre? What do you do about plot holes? Are there books you’ve read that have weak plots but it doesn’t matter because the characters are engaging?

    • 2pm-3pm: beginnings: What makes a good beginning? How much of the character do you want in the first chapter? Do you start with the ‘now’ and write forward or have a flashback (or forward) then return to the now? Do beginnings vary for different genres? Do you have a memorable beginning from a book you’ve read?

    • 3.30pm-4.30pm: middles: how do you combat a saggy middle? What’s needed by the time you get to the middle? How long should a middle be? Does it vary depending on genre? Do you enjoy writing the middle part more than the start or ending? Do you ever get the idea for a middle rather than the start or ending? What do you do if you get stuck around the middle? Do you write a later section and return, knowing more of what’s to come? Have you ever stopped writing altogether because you can’t see your way forward?

      • 5pm-6pm: endings: what makes a great ending? What makes a bad one? If you have a twist where should it appear? Do you have any favourite endings (of yours or from other books, films etc.)? What’s the difference between chapter endings and the end of a book? I mention my four ‘E’s… a book should (provide): Educate ~ Emotion ~ Entertain ~ Escape!
