E M has been writing for several years, but Hearsay is her first novel for adults.

A few years ago, while in an antique shop, she came across a chess set with two pawns missing. A small card next to the set explained that a soldier had given one pawn to his mother and one to his sweetheart before leaving to go to war.

That set E M thinking. If he had returned, why were the pieces still missing?
