When it comes to writing, what matters most to her is crafting interesting characters, and that often means people who have had to overcome something terrible and have become stronger because of it. Life isn’t about preventing bad things from happening, or never experiencing them, it’s about bouncing back and resilience. Everyone can, no matter how devastating the blow, as long as they have the right support. They need to know it’s possible. And they need to believe it. Those are the sort of people she writes about.
Want to know some stuff very few people know about her?
When she was eight, her family went to Papua New Guinea well before it became a tourist destination. They visited a tribe only to find out they were cannibals and found her blonde hair fascinating. Luckily, they were in the middle of a war dance and had to go attack another tribe who had offended them. She was off the menu.
She’s congenitally anosmic, which means she was born without a sense of smell. 1% of the population is anosmic. 1% of that 1% is congenitally anosmic – that’s why you’ve never heard of it before. Her family hadn’t heard of it before either. She was the first in the family and it wasn’t discovered until she was nine.
A few years ago, she discovered that her parents’ messy divorce had been used as a backdrop for a thriller. The author changed their names, but the details and events in the story are real. When you know the story, it isn’t that surprising it was used. The truth can be incredible.
